Will It Fit Through the Gate? Access Width, Path Planning & Delivery Site Checks

Every rental crew has a story about the delivery that should have taken twenty minutes and took ninety, because nobody checked whether the equipment would actually fit through the gate. Access width isn't a glamorous detail, but it's one of the most common reasons a routine delivery turns into a rescheduled booking, a damaged fence, or a unit hauled the long way around a house on a hand truck.

What actually needs to fit, and through what

The question isn't just "will the folded unit fit through the gate" — it's whether the unit, the dolly or hand truck carrying it, and the crew member pushing it all fit together through the narrowest point on the path from the truck to the setup site. A rolled commercial bounce house on an electric flatbed dolly is wider than the unit alone, and crews who measure only the folded inflatable's dimensions routinely get surprised by a gate that's technically wide enough for the unit but too narrow for the unit plus the dolly plus clearance to maneuver.

Standard residential gates commonly run in the 36-42 inch range, which fits most single bounce houses on a standard dolly with some clearance to spare. Larger combo units, obstacle courses, or anything requiring a wider flatbed cart can approach or exceed that clearance, especially once you account for the dolly's wheelbase and the extra swing room needed to turn a corner mid-path rather than travel in a straight line.

Measuring gate width the right way

Measure the actual clear opening, not the gate frame's outer dimensions — hinges, latches, and any post-mounted hardware eat into usable width, sometimes significantly. A gate that measures 40 inches post-to-post might have a real clear opening closer to 36 inches once hardware is accounted for. If a renter is self-reporting gate width over the phone, ask them to measure the narrowest point with the gate fully open, not just glance at it — a gate that swings to 90 degrees against a fence post has a different usable width than one that swings past it.

Double gates (two panels that both open) are worth flagging separately, since a renter describing "a double gate" sometimes means only one panel actually opens in practice, with the other pinned or rusted shut. Confirming both panels swing freely avoids a crew arriving expecting double-width clearance and finding half of it.

Path planning beyond the gate

Gate width solves only the entry point — the full path from street or driveway to setup location deserves the same scrutiny. Narrow side-yard passages, low tree branches, HVAC units, downspouts, and garden beds encroaching on a path are all common obstacles that don't show up in a phone conversation about "is there a clear path to the backyard." A path that's technically wide enough but has a sharp 90-degree turn partway through needs more maneuvering room than the same total width in a straight run, especially with a wheeled dolly carrying a bulky, awkward load.

Grade and surface matter here too: a narrow path that's also sloped or has a stepped transition (a curb, a raised patio edge) compounds the difficulty of getting equipment through cleanly. Flagging any of these at booking — not discovering them mid-delivery — is what separates a smooth twenty-minute setup from a crew improvising a workaround on the spot.

Building access checks into the booking flow

The most reliable fix isn't better on-the-fly judgment from crews, it's catching access issues before the truck leaves the yard. A simple set of booking-time questions — gate width, any turns or narrow sections along the path, overhead clearance for taller equipment, and whether the path is level or has curbs/steps — takes a renter under a minute to answer and catches the large majority of access problems before they become a delivery-day surprise. For deliveries where access is confirmed tight but workable, having the right equipment on the truck matters as much as knowing about the constraint in advance — a narrower dolly or hand truck built for tight-access transport can turn a marginal gate into a non-issue, where showing up with only a full-width flatbed cart turns it into a hauled-by-hand ordeal.

When access genuinely doesn't work

Some sites are simply not workable for a given unit — a gate too narrow for any reasonable dolly configuration, or a path with an obstacle that can't be worked around without risking equipment or property damage. Having a clear, pre-communicated policy for this scenario (relocate to an alternate spot on the property if one exists, downsize to a smaller unit that does fit, or reschedule) prevents a crew from making a rushed, ad-hoc call on-site that either damages a fence squeezing equipment through or leaves a booking unfulfilled with no plan B.
