The mistake most first-time buyers make is shopping by floor area. Square meters are the easy number. What a metal frame tent actually is

A commercial event marquee is a modular aluminum-frame system: extruded box or A-section legs and rafters, bolted or pinned at engineered joints, carrying a tensioned membrane roof and clip-in sidewalls. Because the load path runs through the frame rather than the fabric, the interior is fully clear-span—no center poles, no guy ropes cutting through your floor plan. That is the whole point of the format, and it is what separates a rigid aluminum frame tent from the pole-and-rope tents you rented in a past life.

This is a genuinely different product category from air structures. An inflatable tent held up by a continuous blower or sealed air beams wins on setup speed and packs smaller, but it is built for fast, repeated pop-up use—brand activations, race finish lines, a weekend expo. Clear-span tiers: pick the frame, not the footprint

  • 6m span — the rental-fleet staple. Small weddings, market stalls, hospitality tents. A ~100mm profile handles it.
  • 10m span — mid-size weddings and corporate events, typically 150–250 guests seated. Needs a heavier ~120–130mm profile.
  • 15m+ span — expo halls, banquets, warehouse and industrial temporary cover. Deep box-section rafters (200mm+) and often a double-pitch or arched roof to manage the load.

Two marquees with identical floor area can carry completely different frames. A 10m × 30m unit and a 15m × 20m unit are both 300 m², but the wider clear span demands a stronger rafter and a deeper wall thickness.   • Fire rating: insist on a B1 (DIN 4102) or M2 fire-retardant membrane. Most venues and expo halls will refuse a structure without documented flame-retardant fabric.
  • Optical spec: translucent white for daytime events that want soft natural light, blackout for expos, AV, and product reveals, or clear-roof panels for premium weddings.

Sidewalls should clip into the same keder track as the roof so you can run solid walls, clear "cathedral" windows, or open bays interchangeably. Anchoring and wind rating: the part that keeps you legal

A rigid frame is only as safe as its hold-down. Three anchoring methods cover almost every site:

  • Ground stakes / auger anchors — grass and soil. Fast, cheap, and strong when the ground cooperates; useless on slab.
  • Ballast (concrete or water barrels) — asphalt, plazas, and any hard surface you can't penetrate. Weight requirements climb steeply with span and height, so budget the truck space.
  • Bolted foundation / base plates — long-term installs where the marquee stands for a full season.

A properly engineered clear-span marquee should carry a stated wind rating—commonly in the 100–120 km/h (roughly 28–33 m/s) range for the commercial tier—valid only when anchored to the manufacturer's schedule. That rating is a package deal: the frame, the membrane tension, and the anchor spec together. Change one and the number is void. Ask for the wind figure and the matching anchoring plan in writing; it is what your insurer and the local authority will want to see.

Modular bays: how length actually works

Marquee length isn't fixed—it's built from repeating bays, typically 3m or 5m modules bolted end to end. Buy a 10m × 15m frame today and you can add three more 5m bays next year to reach 10m × 30m, reusing the same legs, rafters, and roof sections. This modularity is the quiet economic advantage of the format: your fleet scales with demand instead of forcing a whole new structure for every larger booking.

Flooring and drainage

For bare grass or short events, guests stand on the ground. For multi-week installs, premium weddings, or uneven sites, add an interlocking sub-floor deck to level the space and keep feet dry. Whatever the floor, grade the surrounding ground and run guttering between joined units—standing water on a large membrane roof adds serious load and is a leading cause of sag and fabric fatigue.

Setup, transport, and the honest labor picture

Be realistic about logistics. A 10m × 20m metal frame tent is a multi-person, multi-hour build—usually a small crew with a forklift or genie lift for the taller rafters, versus the minutes it takes to inflate an air structure. It also ships heavier and takes more truck volume than folded fabric. You trade that setup effort for span, rigidity, and weeks of uptime the inflatable format can't match. If your bookings are short pop-ups, the trade doesn't favor the frame; if they're multi-day and large, it wins easily.

Set expectations honestly with your own clients: a marquee is an engineered temporary structure, not a permanent building. It is not rated as habitable, insulated, permanent warehousing, and it should never be sold as a code-compliant permanent structure.
